At 2,637 metres, Doddabetta is the highest peak in the Nilgiris, and on a clear day the view from the telescope house stretches past Mysore towards the Western Ghats. The catch is that 'clear day' — cloud cover rolls in fast after mid-morning, especially between June and September.
Arrive before 7am and you'll not only beat the crowds bussed up from Ooty town, you'll catch the valley while it's still filling with mist rather than obscured by it. The paid telescope house is worth the small entry fee on a good day, but the car park just below it offers nearly the same panorama for free.
Carry a light jacket even in summer — the wind at the summit is noticeably colder than in Ooty town, ten minutes down the road. Most of our Ooty and Nilgiri Grand Circuit itineraries build in a Doddabetta stop early in the day for exactly this reason.
